The IRS requires electronic filing for Forms 1042 and 1042-S if you meet the filing threshold.

- Financial institutions must e-file Form 1042 for tax year 2024.

Other withholding agents must e-file if they:
- Are required to file 10 or more information returns in a calendar year.
- Are a partnership with more than 100 partners.
- Foreign withholding agents, including foreign financial institutions, are exempt from e-filing Form 1042 for the tax year 2024.

A withholding agent that is not a financial institution must e-file Form 1042-S if it meets either of the following conditions:
- It is required to file 10 or more information returns in a calendar year (including 1042-S and other forms).
- It is a partnership with more than 100 partners.
